| Webspiders & Robots (Search Engines) You absolutely, positively, must promote to the search engines. Most of them only need to know your URL, and will index your entire site for you. Please Note: Many of the search engines are now not accepting submissions during evenings and weekends in attempt to cut down spamming of the indexes. If your submission is not accepted for this reason, Tooter will keep on trying every couple of days until it succeeds. Once you have successfully submitted to the search engines, you can automatically resubmit to them (for example, if your pages have changed) by using the Search Engine Resubmit feature in the pulldown menus. You may only do this once per week. |
|
| Aeiwi | (08/20/2002) - |
Not a big search engine, but they
give your meta tags a real checking, so it's useful to submit to them. |
|
| Alexa | (08/20/2002) - |
Alexa is a spider/index that provides
an in-browser URL recommendation system. |
|
| AllTheWeb | (08/20/2002) - |
Also known as FAST Search, AllTheWeb
is one of my favorite search engines. |
|
| AltaVista | (08/20/2002) - |
One of the original search engines;
they now require manual submissions and have an unusual "ransom letter"
method of enforcing it. Altavista also offers paid inclusion; see my article
on search engine trends for more information. |
|
| AOL Search | (08/20/2002) - |
AOL Search now uses the Open Directory
and Google databases. You can't submit to it anymore -- submit to Open
Directory instead. |
|
| EuroSeek | (08/20/2002) - |
Once mighty in Europe, now uses the
Google database. You can't submit directly anymore. I list them here only
because people ask if I don't. |
|
| ExactSeek | (08/20/2002) - |
New search engine by the creators
of Jayde Online. |
|
| Excite | (08/20/2002) - |
Oh how the mighty have fallen; Excite
is now basically a metasearch engine, they no longer have an add url page. |
|
| (08/20/2002) - |
|
Google is now being turned into a
commercial search engine, and a pretty cool one at that. Even more important,
they have replaced Inktomi as Yahoo's search results provider! |
|
| Inktomi (paid submission) | (08/20/2002) - |
Inktomi (which supplies search engine
results for Hotbot and many other search engines) now has a pay-for-listing
program, with prices starting at $39 for 1 URL. While it doesn't guarantee
a high ranking, it does get you into Inktomi's database quickly, and ensures
that Inktomi will regularly respider your site. I have checked the service
and it seems to be spidering my site regularly (as well as spidering other
pages on the site more often as well! If you have been having trouble
getting into Inktomi (they've been very slow for years!), this may be
worth considering. |
|
| Inktomi (free submission) | (08/20/2002) - |
Currently, the easiest way to submit
to Inktomi for free is via Microsoft's BCentral site. At this time, it
is unclear if they mind autosubmission, but the structure of their submission
page hints that they might, so I don't autosubmit to them. |
|
| Kanoodle | (08/20/2002) - |
Uses a "pay-for-clicks" system similar
to Overture, but I'm not sure if they are getting enough traffic to make
it worthwhile. If you try them and get good results, let me know! |
|
| Kunani | (08/31/2002) - |
New search engine, way too soon to
know if they'll be any factor. |
|
| Lycos | (08/20/2002) - |
While Lycos is apparently still accepting
free submissions, the public free submit page now wants you to pay for
guaranteed inclusion. HOWEVER, if you look carefully you will find an
'Free Site Submission' option that lets you submit one url for free if
you join the Lycos Network. Click the submit page link (above) then look
for the free option on the right of the window. Lycos may be moving to
using AllTheWeb (FAST) for their database. |
|
| Moteurderecherche | (08/20/2002) - |
French-based, multilingual search
engine, apparently requires payment for submission. |
|
| National Directory | (08/20/2002) - |
National Directory is both a search
engine and an index. SelfPromotion.com can submit your URL to the search
engine half; the index half is provided by Open Directory. |
|
| Overture.com | (08/20/2002) - |
Overture (formerly Goto.com) now
only has a "pay-for-clicks" system that lets you bid for the top position
in search returns; this lets you "bid" for certain keywords. My experience
is that this works extremely well. If you sell stuff on the web, you simply
must buy clickthroughs from this site!Read my tutorial
on Overture and RealNames for detailed information on this site. |
|
| SearchHippo | (08/20/2002) - |
New search engine, interesting technical
design. You have to create an account in order to submit. |
|
| SearchIt | (08/20/2002) - |
New search engine; had some problems
recently but now back online |
|
| Subjex | (08/20/2002) - |
This search engine uses a dialogue-based
interface. |
|
| Teoma | (08/20/2002) - |
Hot new search engine that is actively
spidering the web. However, only way to submit to them directly is via
a $30/year pay-for-inclusion program. At present, I don't think it is
cost effective but this may change. |
|
| TryAmerica | (08/20/2002) - |
New, fairly minor search engine. |
|
| What-U-Seek | (08/20/2002) - |
Interesting site. Has both paid (Mamma's
Collection) and free (WhatUSeek database) submission options. To find
the free submit, scroll to the bottom of the page. |
|
| Auto-resubmit | |
This Special Contributor Option will
automatically resubmit your URL every 45 days to all of the Search Engines
(listed above) that you've already submitted to at least once. |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (Major) Please read carefully: These are the big guys. You absolutely must get listed in these. You will notice that a lot of them are MANUAL links, which means you must visit them and apply in person. There are two main reasons why this is so; first, they are very important, so it is a good idea to visit each one in person to find the right place to place your listing, and take the time to craft the perfect submission. Secondly, they often have convoluted registration forms that make effective autosubmission difficult. My rule of thumb is that if I cannot do an automatic submission for you that is as good as (or better!) than you could do by visiting the site yourself, I require you to visit the site yourself. I won't do substandard submissions! Before manually submitting to any of the Major Indexes, you are very strongly advised to read my Tips on Submitting to Yahoo. This advice applies not just to Yahoo, but to all Indexes! |
|
| About.com (formerly, The Mining Company) | (08/20/2002) - |
About.com can be difficult to get
into. You have to have a truly useful and wonderful site. Assuming you
do, then visit their site, drill down to the appropriate category, then
click on the picture of the category guide to find out his email address.
Read the tips cunningly hidden on my "Getting listed in Yahoo!" page,
then email him a nice letter explaining why your site should be listed. |
|
| Ask.com (aka Ask Jeeves) | (08/20/2002) - |
Now using the Teoma database, which
is pay-for-inclusion. Not sure it's worth it yet. |
|
| Jayde | (08/20/2002) - |
The Jayde Online Directory is an
excellent place to list. |
|
| JoeAnt.com | (08/20/2002) - |
The volunteers who built the Go.com
directory are working hard to keep it alive in an Open-Directory style
project. One of two reincarnations of the Go.com directory. |
|
| GoGuides.org | (08/20/2002) - |
The volunteers who built the Go.com
directory are working hard to keep it alive in an Open-Directory style
project. One of two reincarnations of the Go.com directory, several people
have told me nice things about them. |
|
| LookSmart | (08/20/2002) - |
LookSmart's recent change to a pay-per-click
model, and the way they have betrayed people who previously paid for listings,
means I cannot in any way recommend spending any money with them. Do
not submit to these people. |
|
| MSN Search Index | (08/20/2002) - |
MSN uses Inktomi as their search
engine (thus, no point in submitting to them as well), and LookSmart as
their index (ditto). |
|
| Open Directory Project | (08/20/2002) - |
Formerly Newhoo, then part of the
Mozilla project, and now the directory of choice for HotBot and Lycos!
A Yahoo with a twist; people volunteer to moderate various categories
and review the sites. |
|
| Rex | (08/20/2002) - |
A useful net index. Not one of the
biggest, but it looks nice and works well. |
|
| TurnPike | (08/20/2002) - |
The TurnPike Emporium is a general
links site. |
|
| Yahoo | (08/20/2002) - |
Yahoo is without a doubt the single
most important index on the Internet, and it is an absolute must that
you get listed there. |
|
| Zeal | (08/20/2002) - |
Volunteer-rated index, similar to
Open Directory. Now owned by LookSmart. Submitting to Zeal can get you
into the main Looksmart index, if it's a non-commercial site. It can also
get you into Altavista, Lycos, and MSN Search. I've had reports that Zeal
listings rank highly in these search engines. |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part
1, A-G) Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate. NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn. |
|
| AussieSeek | (08/20/2002) - |
The reincarnation of Matilda; charges
AU$50 for submissions. |
|
| Ditto | (08/20/2002) - |
Ditto is a search engine that specializes
in images, not text. If you are selling images, might be worth submitting
to. |
|
| FetchDog | (08/20/2002) - |
An index that combines an index with
discussion forums about topics people search about. Note: now requires
payment ($29 or $49) for listing, probably not worth it! |
|
| Galaxy | (08/20/2002) - |
One of the oldest indexes on the
net, though it's never been a big player. |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part
2, H-N) Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate. NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn. |
|
| HotRate | (08/20/2002) - |
New, volunteer reviewed index. If
you join and review sites, you can actually get paid, but you have to
visit in person to do this. |
|
| InfoSpace | (08/20/2002) - |
General index. |
|
| LifeStyle UK | (08/20/2002) - |
A great (and very selective) British
Index. |
|
| LinkMaster | (08/20/2002) - |
A big links site. They require you
to give them a reciprocal link. If you run a links site that accepts submissions,
you should register manually, as they have a special feature for that. |
|
| NetInsert | (08/20/2002) - |
Sort of a hybrid between an index
and a search engine. You put a special meta tag on your page that defines
what category you go into, then it spiders you! |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part
3, O-S) Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate. NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn. |
|
| OneMission | (08/20/2002) - |
This index is moderated by volunteers,
ala Open Directory. If you can't find a category you like, create it and
be it's moderator! |
|
| OpenHere | (08/20/2002) - |
Nice index that recently started.
You can be a volunteer editor and add multiple pages. |
|
| PHATOZ | (08/20/2002) - |
General Catalog of Sites |
|
| Qango | (08/20/2002) - |
Well put together. You have to find
your category and submit from the category page. Now charges an $40 fee
for express application, but has a slower free option apparently. |
|
| Scrub The Web | (08/20/2002) - |
Another great index. Lets you enter
a lot of keywords. |
|
| SearchHound | (08/20/2002) - |
Like Overture, they allow you to
buy a high ranking; otherwise, they most democratically rotate the order
of the search results. |
|
| SearchKing | (08/20/2002) - |
A promising index that is trying
to use the popularity of user choices to rank the search results; requires
account creation on the site to submit. |
|
| SearchTheWeb | (08/20/2002) - |
Nice-looking index. |
|
| SurfGopher | (08/20/2002) - |
Small search engine. |
|
| SurfSafely | (08/20/2002) - |
Nice-looking index that only lists
'kid safe' sites. |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part
4, T-Z) Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate. NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn. |
|
| ViscaOnline | (08/20/2002) - |
New General index. |
|
| WithOneClick | (08/20/2002) - |

|
| ZippyFinder | (08/20/2002) - |
A family-friendly search engine.
They require either a reciprocal link or a $5 listing fee. |
|
| Indexes & Catalogs (Personal) Only people promoting their personal "home pages" should promote to these indexes. Consult the site descriptions to make sure your promotion is appropriate. |
|

personal homepages. |
|
| Other personal indexes | |

| 411Locate | (08/20/2002) - |
An Internet Yellow Pages. Apparently
accepts submissions only from North American sites. |
|
| AllBusiness | (08/20/2002) - |
Listings are free, but Premium Listings
cost extra. WARNING: I have received a report that this
directory sells the email addresses they collect to third-parties. Also,
they try to sell enhanced listings, and one user has reported to me that
they generate little or no extra traffic. |
|
| BizCardz | (08/20/2002) - |
Basic Business links site; just relaunched.
Has $2.50 express listing service. Drill down to the page you want to
be listed on, then click the Add Your Listing button. |
|
| Overture.com | (08/20/2002) - |
Overture (formerly Goto.com) now
only has a "pay-for-clicks" system that lets you bid for the top position
in search returns; this lets you "bid" for certain keywords. My experience
is that this works well. They no longer accept free listings, but may
still be spidering the web. |
|

| Indexes & Catalogs (Shopping) These sites only accept promotions from sites that SELL things on the web, and use a secure server (https:) and/or "shopping cart" software. Your store MUST quote actual prices. If you are promoting a personal website, or you don't sell via the web, you should NOT promote to them! |
|
