Promotion Status

In all cases, following the status will be a "Mark as Completed" checkmark (). This lets you keep track of sites we've manually submitted to.

Sites whose name line has a yellow background (as opposed to alternating white and gray) are those that will require you to visit the site during the data entry process to obtain some important information. As this takes extra time (and it can be annoying if the site happens to be down), you may want to promote to them when you have more time.

NOTE: Some sites request information such as name, email address, mailing address, and so on, that some users may not want to provide.

Webspiders & Robots (Search Engines)
You absolutely, positively, must promote to the search engines. Most of them only need to know your URL, and will index your entire site for you. Please Note: Many of the search engines are now not accepting submissions during evenings and weekends in attempt to cut down spamming of the indexes. If your submission is not accepted for this reason, Tooter will keep on trying every couple of days until it succeeds.

Once you have successfully submitted to the search engines, you can automatically resubmit to them (for example, if your pages have changed) by using the Search Engine Resubmit feature in the pulldown menus. You may only do this once per week.

Aeiwi (08/20/2002) -

Not a big search engine, but they give your meta tags a real checking, so it's useful to submit to them.

Please read the restrictions below carefully!

Restrictions: Only sites whose URLs end in a / are accepted. In order for Aeiwi to properly index your site, you must have META description and keywords tags on your pages. Aeiwi scans your page and will often reject it if it doesn't like the format of your meta tags, the size of your title, and so on. If so, you'll get an email from Tooter containing a report of what Aeiwi didn't like. If you have the time, you might want to fix these things and resubmit to ALL the search engines.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Alexa (08/20/2002) -

Alexa is a spider/index that provides an in-browser URL recommendation system.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

AllTheWeb (08/20/2002) -

Also known as FAST Search, AllTheWeb is one of my favorite search engines.

Restrictions: Only root domain urls (eg: http://www.animeigo.com/) are accepted, but they promise to spider your entire site.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

AltaVista (08/20/2002) -

One of the original search engines; they now require manual submissions and have an unusual "ransom letter" method of enforcing it. Altavista also offers paid inclusion; see my article on search engine trends for more information.

Restrictions: Altavista has not added any listings submitted via their free add url page since summer of 2001! Seems like they are going downhill fast.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

AOL Search (08/20/2002) -

AOL Search now uses the Open Directory and Google databases. You can't submit to it anymore -- submit to Open Directory instead.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

EuroSeek (08/20/2002) -

Once mighty in Europe, now uses the Google database. You can't submit directly anymore. I list them here only because people ask if I don't.

Restrictions: Only lists sites with their own domain that are not hosted on a free service like GeoCities.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

ExactSeek (08/20/2002) -

New search engine by the creators of Jayde Online.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Excite (08/20/2002) -

Oh how the mighty have fallen; Excite is now basically a metasearch engine, they no longer have an add url page.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page

Google (08/20/2002) -

Google is now being turned into a commercial search engine, and a pretty cool one at that. Even more important, they have replaced Inktomi as Yahoo's search results provider!

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Inktomi (paid submission) (08/20/2002) -

Inktomi (which supplies search engine results for Hotbot and many other search engines) now has a pay-for-listing program, with prices starting at $39 for 1 URL. While it doesn't guarantee a high ranking, it does get you into Inktomi's database quickly, and ensures that Inktomi will regularly respider your site. I have checked the service and it seems to be spidering my site regularly (as well as spidering other pages on the site more often as well! If you have been having trouble getting into Inktomi (they've been very slow for years!), this may be worth considering.

Restrictions: Note: I get a commission on referrals; as always, it is donated to the Salvation Army.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Inktomi (free submission) (08/20/2002) -

Currently, the easiest way to submit to Inktomi for free is via Microsoft's BCentral site. At this time, it is unclear if they mind autosubmission, but the structure of their submission page hints that they might, so I don't autosubmit to them.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Kanoodle (08/20/2002) -

Uses a "pay-for-clicks" system similar to Overture, but I'm not sure if they are getting enough traffic to make it worthwhile. If you try them and get good results, let me know!

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Kunani (08/31/2002) -

New search engine, way too soon to know if they'll be any factor.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Lycos (08/20/2002) -

While Lycos is apparently still accepting free submissions, the public free submit page now wants you to pay for guaranteed inclusion. HOWEVER, if you look carefully you will find an 'Free Site Submission' option that lets you submit one url for free if you join the Lycos Network. Click the submit page link (above) then look for the free option on the right of the window. Lycos may be moving to using AllTheWeb (FAST) for their database.

Restrictions: A caveat: never create a blank robots.txt file; some Search Engines, such as Lycos, think this means "don't index me!" You can find a link to information about robots.txt files on the Links of Interest page (and if you don't know what one is, don't worry!)

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Moteurderecherche (08/20/2002) -

French-based, multilingual search engine, apparently requires payment for submission.

Restrictions: For convenience I have also listed this search engine under International, French-language

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

National Directory (08/20/2002) -

National Directory is both a search engine and an index. SelfPromotion.com can submit your URL to the search engine half; the index half is provided by Open Directory.

Restrictions: No longer accepting automated submissions. They've installed a secret-code system similar to Altavista's. Note that after you submit to it (for free), you'll be directed to another submission service (pay!).

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Overture.com (08/20/2002) -

Overture (formerly Goto.com) now only has a "pay-for-clicks" system that lets you bid for the top position in search returns; this lets you "bid" for certain keywords. My experience is that this works extremely well. If you sell stuff on the web, you simply must buy clickthroughs from this site!Read my tutorial on Overture and RealNames for detailed information on this site.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

SearchHippo (08/20/2002) -

New search engine, interesting technical design. You have to create an account in order to submit.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Restrictions: None.

This search engine uses a dialogue-based interface.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Teoma (08/20/2002) -

Hot new search engine that is actively spidering the web. However, only way to submit to them directly is via a $30/year pay-for-inclusion program. At present, I don't think it is cost effective but this may change.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

TryAmerica (08/20/2002) -

New, fairly minor search engine.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

What-U-Seek (08/20/2002) -

Interesting site. Has both paid (Mamma's Collection) and free (WhatUSeek database) submission options. To find the free submit, scroll to the bottom of the page.

Restrictions: Based on my results, the paid inclusion isn't worth it.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Auto-resubmit

This Special Contributor Option will automatically resubmit your URL every 45 days to all of the Search Engines (listed above) that you've already submitted to at least once.

To enable this option, check it and click ENTER DATA below (if it is already checked, then auto-resubmit is already enabled for this record). It will trigger an immediate promotion to all the search engines (above) that you've previously tried to promote to, as well as any that you've just checked. Then, every 45 days, your URL will be resubmitted to these sites.

If you subsequently submit to additional search engines, they will automatically be added to the list of autoresubmitted sites.

Disabling auto-resubmit: Use one of the following links to disable auto-resubmit on this record only or on all of your records.

Restrictions: None.

Indexes & Catalogs (Major)

Please read carefully:

These are the big guys. You absolutely must get listed in these. You will notice that a lot of them are MANUAL links, which means you must visit them and apply in person. There are two main reasons why this is so; first, they are very important, so it is a good idea to visit each one in person to find the right place to place your listing, and take the time to craft the perfect submission. Secondly, they often have convoluted registration forms that make effective autosubmission difficult.

My rule of thumb is that if I cannot do an automatic submission for you that is as good as (or better!) than you could do by visiting the site yourself, I require you to visit the site yourself. I won't do substandard submissions!

Before manually submitting to any of the Major Indexes, you are very strongly advised to read my Tips on Submitting to Yahoo. This advice applies not just to Yahoo, but to all Indexes!

About.com (formerly, The Mining Company) (08/20/2002) -

About.com can be difficult to get into. You have to have a truly useful and wonderful site. Assuming you do, then visit their site, drill down to the appropriate category, then click on the picture of the category guide to find out his email address. Read the tips cunningly hidden on my "Getting listed in Yahoo!" page, then email him a nice letter explaining why your site should be listed.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page

Ask.com (aka Ask Jeeves) (08/20/2002) -

Now using the Teoma database, which is pay-for-inclusion. Not sure it's worth it yet.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Jayde (08/20/2002) -

The Jayde Online Directory is an excellent place to list.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Name and Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

JoeAnt.com (08/20/2002) -

The volunteers who built the Go.com directory are working hard to keep it alive in an Open-Directory style project. One of two reincarnations of the Go.com directory.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page

GoGuides.org (08/20/2002) -

The volunteers who built the Go.com directory are working hard to keep it alive in an Open-Directory style project. One of two reincarnations of the Go.com directory, several people have told me nice things about them.

Restrictions: They were kind enough to make me site of the month for March 2002!

Access: Home Page

LookSmart (08/20/2002) -

LookSmart's recent change to a pay-per-click model, and the way they have betrayed people who previously paid for listings, means I cannot in any way recommend spending any money with them. Do not submit to these people.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page

MSN Search Index (08/20/2002) -

MSN uses Inktomi as their search engine (thus, no point in submitting to them as well), and LookSmart as their index (ditto).

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Open Directory Project (08/20/2002) -

Formerly Newhoo, then part of the Mozilla project, and now the directory of choice for HotBot and Lycos! A Yahoo with a twist; people volunteer to moderate various categories and review the sites.

Restrictions: ODP's current search facility does WORD searches, not string searches, so that the keyword embedding technique does not work. So your description for ODP should avoid pluralized words unless they are likely to be in search queries.

Access: Home Page : Data you might need when doing the submission

Rex (08/20/2002) -

A useful net index. Not one of the biggest, but it looks nice and works well.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Name, Email Address and Organization Name.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

TurnPike (08/20/2002) -

The TurnPike Emporium is a general links site.

Restrictions: No adult sites allowed; Your URL must be 60 characters or less in length.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Name and Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Yahoo (08/20/2002) -

Yahoo is without a doubt the single most important index on the Internet, and it is an absolute must that you get listed there.

Before you submit to Yahoo, it is absolutely essential that you read my tips on getting listed in Yahoo. I constantly update this page with all the latest news on Yahoo, and all the tricks to making a perfect submission. Please read the tips page before submitting to Yahoo -- there are many subtle techniques that can radically improve both your chances of getting in and the number of hits you'll get.

To make this registration easier for you, click here to pop up a window containing data you've already entered on SelfPromotion.com that will be useful when applying at Yahoo. This option is only useful if you have a browser that supports multiple windows.

Zeal (08/20/2002) -

Volunteer-rated index, similar to Open Directory. Now owned by LookSmart. Submitting to Zeal can get you into the main Looksmart index, if it's a non-commercial site. It can also get you into Altavista, Lycos, and MSN Search. I've had reports that Zeal listings rank highly in these search engines.

Restrictions: In order to submit to Zeal, you must become a volunteer editor and pass a test. Not hard to do, and the test develops good 'title and description writing' skills.

Access: Home Page

Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part 1, A-G)
Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate.

NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn.

AussieSeek (08/20/2002) -

The reincarnation of Matilda; charges AU$50 for submissions.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Ditto (08/20/2002) -

Ditto is a search engine that specializes in images, not text. If you are selling images, might be worth submitting to.

Restrictions: No adult sites accepted.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

FetchDog (08/20/2002) -

An index that combines an index with discussion forums about topics people search about. Note: now requires payment ($29 or $49) for listing, probably not worth it!

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Galaxy (08/20/2002) -

One of the oldest indexes on the net, though it's never been a big player.

Restrictions: Galaxy will only review your site if you pay a fee of $5-100, and even then, you may not get in.

Access: Home Page

Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part 2, H-N)
Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate.

NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn.

HotRate (08/20/2002) -

New, volunteer reviewed index. If you join and review sites, you can actually get paid, but you have to visit in person to do this.

A great (and very selective) British Index.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

LinkMaster (08/20/2002) -

A big links site. They require you to give them a reciprocal link. If you run a links site that accepts submissions, you should register manually, as they have a special feature for that.

Restrictions: Linkmaster asks that you grant them a reciprocal link, and their submission form asks for the URL of that page. So if you don't want to do this, you shouldn't submit to them. Like all sites marked in Yellow, autosubmission requires visiting them to get some information, so you might want to skip them or do them manually.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Email Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page : Data you might need when doing the submission

NetInsert (08/20/2002) -

Sort of a hybrid between an index and a search engine. You put a special meta tag on your page that defines what category you go into, then it spiders you!

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page

Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part 3, O-S)
Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate.

NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn.

OneMission (08/20/2002) -

This index is moderated by volunteers, ala Open Directory. If you can't find a category you like, create it and be it's moderator!

Restrictions: Apparently only accepts sites that have their own domain name.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

SearchKing (08/20/2002) -

Indexes & Catalogs (General, Part 4, T-Z)
Most sites should promote to these general indexes. However, consult the site descriptions to make sure your site is appropriate.

NOTE: Because of the number of general indexes, if you were to select them all at once, the data entry page would be very large. Thus, I've split them up into groups of 10 or so. Simply do each group in turn.

Restrictions: None.

Possibly Sensitive Required Information: Name, Email Address, Organization Name, Phone Contact and Address.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

AllBusiness (08/20/2002) -

Listings are free, but Premium Listings cost extra. WARNING: I have received a report that this directory sells the email addresses they collect to third-parties. Also, they try to sell enhanced listings, and one user has reported to me that they generate little or no extra traffic.

Step 1: Yahoo (aka 'Yahoo uber alles')
If your site is located in, or related to, a country that has a local Yahoo index, you should register via the local index first!

Yahoo (NOT DONE) -

BuyItOnline (NOT DONE) -

Currently being redesigned, BuyItOnline is in the process of becoming a large web-mall for people who sell mail-order hard goods (not services) over the net.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page : Data you might need when doing the submission

LinkMaster (NOT DONE) -

MallPark (NOT DONE) -

Another index of online commerce sites. Free listing, but you can pay for better listings or services like shopping carts.

Restrictions: Due to their submissions process, you have to apply manually. It is unclear if free listings are of much value.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page : Data you might need when doing the submission

Open Directory Project (08/20/2002) -

Yahoo with a twist; people volunteer to moderate various categories and review the sites. Rapidly becoming very popular.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Data you might need when doing the submission

Overture (NOT DONE) -

Overture (formerly Goto.com) now only has a "pay-for-clicks" system that lets you bid for the top position in search returns; this lets you "bid" for certain keywords. My experience is that this works well. They no longer accept free listings, but may still be spidering the web.

Restrictions: None.

Access: Home Page : Submission Page

Yahoo (NOT DONE) -

Yahoo is without a doubt the single most important index on the Internet, and it is an absolute must that you get listed there.
